Kāhui Raukura Reo Māori Alumni

Huarahi Māori programme alumni, staff and their whānau gathered for the celebration of the programme's 21st anniversary in 2017.

The Huarahi Māori programme at the Faculty of Education and Social Work has been running for more than 21 years. At its 21st anniversary celebrations in 2017 more than 280 alumni, students, staff and their whānau arrived to honour the past and celebrate the future with the launch of the new Kāhui Raukura Reo Māori Alumni community.

Te Puna Wānanga, the School of Māori and Indigenous Education, is leading a three-year strategy that aims to grow the Kāhui Raukura Reo Māori Alumni community. It envisions an engaged and enthusiastic alumni community that connects with one another to promote the regeneration of te reo Māori across the University.

The strategy includes:

  • Developing recognition programmes to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of Kāhui Raukura in the regeneration of te reo Māori
  • Providing reo Māori learning and networking programmes to support career opportunities for staff, students and alumni
  • Delivering innovative and relevant communications to inspire and motivate Kāhui Raukura in ongoing engagement with the University
  • Creating opportunities such as volunteer, advocacy and giving programmes at Kāhui Raukura Reo Māori Alumni community events

During the 21st anniversary celebrations the Kāhui Raukura Reo Māori Alumni community presented awards to acknowledge the contribution of some of its members, including staff who were integral to the development and early teaching in the Huarahi Māori and Reo Hāpai programmes. To help with the regeneration of te reo Māori across the University of Auckland, an invitation to join the Kāhui Raukura Reo Māori Alumni community is extended to current students of the Faculty of Education and Social Work including graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori specialisation and Reo Hāpai programmes, postgraduate diploma, masters and doctoral programmes as well as students and alumni of the wider University.
