About Us

Find out about who we are and what we do at the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

As the world develops at an ever exciting pace, so does our Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Teachers and social workers are essential to improving the social, cultural, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of individuals, families and communities through helping people to understand and develop their identity, expand their opportunities and achieve their potential.

These professions are at the heart of our mission: Leading Learning, Changing Lives.

The leading education provider in New Zealand

The Faculty of Education and Social Work is the leading education provider in the country. With over 35 programmes ranging from foundation courses through to doctoral degrees as well as active researchers and practitioners who contribute to local, national and global knowledge and practice, the range of services offered at the faculty are broad and diverse.

The latest international rankings* place the University of Auckland well ahead of its competitors for education as a subject. Ranked at 17th in the world, we are in the top 2% of the world's universities and the only NZ University to feature in the top 50. This matters for us and our students because one of the ranking criteria is Employer Reputation. We are the leading provider of employable, high quality graduates in New Zealand.

The faculty is also officially recognised as the most research-productive and internationally reputable education faculty in the country and our high number of active researchers are nationally and internationally recognised for their work.**

The Faculty of Education and Social Work has a proud history of more than 140 years’ experience as high quality teacher and professional education specialists and more than 30 years’ experience in social services research and education.

The faculty is primarily based at Epsom Campus in Auckland, the home of the former Auckland College of Education. Some programmes are also offered at the University's City Campus but we are also unique in that we bring education to the community by offering study options at our Tai Tokerau Campus in Whangarei and at the Manukau Institute of Technology's Otara Campus through the University of Auckland at Manukau Programme.

The Auckland Training College was established 1881. On 1 September 2004 the Auckland College of Education merged with the School of Education at the University of Auckland to form the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
