MEd [Hons] (University of Auckland), BA (University of Auckland), Diploma in Teaching (University of Auckland).

Peter has over thirty years experience in the education sector. He has taught most levels of primary schooling and spent eighteen years in education management, including eleven years as a principal, the last six in a large primary school. He has lectured in Mathematics at North Shore Teachers College, and at the Faculty of Education since 2001.

Peter’s recent research activity has centred on the effects of mathematics education courses provided by the University of Auckland in enhancing teacher participants’ pedagogical content knowledge in numeracy. Initially, this research was undertaken to determine how the teacher participants perceived the graduate diploma-level courses undertaken, and to determine the extent to which the courses had been successful in changing their beliefs about numeracy. The second stage focused on the effect the courses had had on the personal mathematics of teacher participants. The current focus involves observations in teacher participants’ classrooms to determine whether the practices promoted in the courses are commensurate with those promoted in the two mathematics education courses and associated in-class facilitation.

Peter currently co-ordinates the two Mathematics and Statistics courses for students who are already university graduates, and completing a one-year pre-service diploma in teaching.
