Recent roles included co-ordination for the SEMO initiative (Strengthening Education in Mangere and Otara) in a lead school, and establishment of an early childhood family centre as part of the Early Childhood-Primary Link (ECPL). Further work included co-ordination and professional development within TESSOL and Special Education.
Marineke lectures within the following programmes at the University of Auckland: Bachelor of Education (Teaching) - both Primary and Early Childhood; Bachelor of Arts, Graduate Diploma of Literacy Education (including Graduate Diploma of TESSOL), Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education.
Areas of expertise include integrating children’s reading, writing and visual language across the curriculum. She promotes effective literacy practice in the early years, including ways to use picture books and factual texts. Interests in providing authentic experiences for children has led to her co-involvement in developing an educational centre at the Franklin Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary, South of Auckland. The venture aims to contribute to Learning Experiences outside the Classroom (LEOTC), by engaging children in learning about wild life, conservation and animal management. It runs children’s educational programmes such as ‘Junior Zoo-keepers’, manages visits for school and interest groups, and aims to facilitate courses for educators.
Marineke, along with researchers from the School, is currently involved in research on enhancing children’s writing achievement within a cluster of Manurewa Schools.
