Visible Learning: what actually works in schools to improve learning

21 October (Auckland), 22 October 2009 (Christchurch)

John Hattie (Professor of Education, Faculty of Education, The University of Auckland) is the author of the acclaimed Visible Learning: a synthesis of over 800 meta-analyses relating to achievement (Routledge: New York 2009). Sold out in Auckland and a large turnout in Christchurch, this seminar presented by a world class researcher and author was clearly one of strong interest and relevance to educators. With the seminar’s focus on what actually works in schools and classrooms to improve learning outcomes for students, participants were enthusiastic to know about the research findings from the meta-analyses and how they could apply the key findings in their own schools. A central theme was the power of high quality feedback to promote learning and the ways assessment can optimise this feedback. For schools to address the wide variance of teaching effect by teachers in different classrooms, leaders need to know what works across all age levels and all subjects to increase learning opportunities for their students. The seminar provided opportunities for the participants to hear about and engage in the research findings, ask questions, consider their own schools in the workshops in relation to ‘Where am I going? How am I going? Where to next?’
