Ulu Waqavanua

Ulu Waqavanua completed a Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Early Childhood Education and is now working full-time at an ECE centre in Manukau. Her goal is to work towards gaining a masters degree and to open an early childhood centre with a multicultural focus.

“After working with youth programmes in Fiji and as a primary school tutor in New Zealand, I decided to get a proper qualification. I started with the Diploma and was encouraged to move on to the degree by lecturers who are informed, approachable and down to earth. They make learning easy, and I really enjoyed the group discussions, tutorials and small class sizes. As a mother of five boys I believe that quality multicultural education is really important, especially for under fives. This programme has reinforced my positive attitude toward diversity, a quality which is essential in my work as we have children in our centre from all over the world.”

Nicola Attwood

"I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but I found that working for a few years before University gave me valuable life experience that I could bring to my studies and to teaching. Our class was very close and supportive and despite the diversity of students we were not afraid to debate and share differing opinions. A focus of the degree is classroom management, such as structuring your classroom and setting expectations so that real learning can take place. We also learn to cater for different styles of learning, and the art papers are very practical. If you have a love of working with children and want to help them develop, teaching is the most rewarding thing you can do."

Nicola Attwood teaches Year 7 at Orewa College and uses her sporting experience as a Northland Hockey Representative in the NHL to coach the Orewa College hockey teams. She studied for her degree at the University’s Te Tai Tokerau Campus in Whangarei.
