Totara House Leader
Southern Cross Campus
Mary Brown graduated with a Graduate Teaching Diploma (Secondary) and was teaching geography for just one year at Southern Cross Campus when she was promoted to become a Dean at the Senior School. Now known as House Leader, she says this responsibility allows her to meet more students than she would as a subject teacher and offers a valuable opportunity to build on pastoral relationships with students and their families. The work is full of challenges and she says you can never quite know what’s going to happen next.
“I still love sharing my passion for geography with the kids, but being a house leader has been a great learning curve for me as a beginning teacher.”

GradDipTchg (Primary)
An-Ya graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) and is now teaching at a primary school in Auckland. She was offered a job in her second placement (practicum) – just three months into the one-year diploma. By the time she completed the programme, she was all set and ready to teach.
“I teach a Year 2 class which is a great age group as they are becoming independent and are keen to learn, and I enjoy creating a programme that is centred around them and which is fun as well. They have made so much progress in one term and have come along in leaps and bounds. It’s really rewarding seeing how much they learn and what I can do for them. Every day is different and I’m happy because I’m doing something I enjoy and the kids always brighten my day.”
