Faculty of Education

About us

Welcome to the School of Critical Studies in Education.

The School of Critical Studies in Education (CRSTIE) focusses on education studies, curriculum studies (in health and physical education, and social sciences education), and Pasifika education studies.

Core themes include: the purpose and practices of education and teacher education; the nature of inclusive education practices in meeting the needs of all learners; the links between education and Pasifika success; the nature and impact of curriculum design and implementation on education outcomes.

Through our postgraduate courses, research strategy, and collaborations nationally and around the world, CRSTIE helps prepare future leaders who will have a profound impact on education practice, policy, and research.

CRSTIE’s academic staff members specialise in four main areas:

With over 50 academic and general staff members, our school is uniquely diverse, engaging in a range of teaching and research studies. Some of the faculty’s degree programmes and specialisations, in areas such as Physical Education and also Pasifika Early Childhood Education, are mainly based here.

CRSTIE also plays a major role in the Doctor of Education programme, as well as participating in a wide range of other programmes, including foundation education, human services, and liberal arts.

We have a dynamic postgraduate student community supported by CRSTIE supervisors, dedicated facilities, regular CRSTIE research seminars and visiting scholars.

We offer postgraduate studentships focused on research in areas such as higher education, sexuality education, New Zealand history of education, curriculum design and evaluation, quality teaching in tertiary education, and aquatics education.

Explore the school’s web site and learn more about our activities and contributions. Academic profiles of CRSTIE staff can be found by going to their individual pages. Contact details for our school’s general staff are also available. Please feel free to contact me.
