Welcome to Social Work at The University of Auckland

The social work team in the School of Counselling, Human Services and Social Work is committed to developing confident practitioners who are inquiring and seek to utilise and undertake research. Students have access to the latest research findings in social work and related fields. We offer an integrated approach; combining key knowledge from the social sciences, social work theory and practice skills, and the impact of policy and legal systems, along with specialized knowledge for practice in health, child and family and youth social work services. The emphasis of the programme is on developing culturally grounded and responsive practitioners who understand the diversity in local, regional and New Zealand communities. Continuing education opportunities include education for Professional Supervision, Counselling, health social work in collaboration with the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and from 2011 our new Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work and Master of Social Work.

Messages to future Social Work students from the graduating BSW class of 2011
messages-2011-BSW-students.jpg

We asked these students to write advice for people following them into the BSW here at The University of Auckland. Here are some of their messages:

  • Keep your peers close, they are a great form of knowledge and support
  • Expect your assumptions about the world and your place in it to be challenged
  • Don't be afraid of the lecturers - they are here to help
