New monograph promotes New Zealand research in arts education
![]() |
There’s nothing like a shared project to bond people and ideas together, especially when it includes talented academics from the former School for Visual and Creative Arts in Education, who have now joined the larger School of Arts, Languages and Literacies.
Academics from both schools were involved in the production of Arts in Education - Critical Perspectives from Teacher Educators, a monograph that contains peer reviewed articles drawn from the authors’ research, commentaries that consider the role of drama, dance, music and the visual arts, at early childhood, primary and secondary levels.
The introduction is written by Peter Smith, OBE, who reviews the history of arts education in New Zealand within a wider context of Western influences which have led, at times, to the marginalisation of arts education in the curriculum.
Contributor Dr Jill Smith says that the project was an ideal opportunity for members of the School for Visual and Creative Arts in Education to come together and celebrate their history, as well as showcase their work to local, national and international audiences.
Members of the faculty were involved in all aspects of production, including the cover, which was designed by visual arts lecturer, Robert Hoeberigs.
