The following programmes are unique to the School of Arts, Languages and Literacies.

Courses can be taken on a one-off basis or as credit towards qualifications and are delivered with a mix of on-campus, school-based or online delivery. Courses are practical and designed to integrate with the requirements of the NZ Curriculum and best classroom practice. The focus is on designing strategies, frameworks and learning experiences that enhance learning and classroom practice.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Literacy Education Specialisation)
This programme provides academic and professional knowledge to enhance teachers’ professional practice in specialist literacy teacher roles. It is focused on developing expertise to meet the needs of low literacy achievers, and to advise teachers on the development of approaches and the application of strategies to enhance children’s literacy. The programme emphasizes the relationship between literacy theory and informed practices. It is based on a wide range of literacy theories, and New Zealand and international research. There is emphasis on enabling the literacy teacher to review and refine practice when working with children and with teachers.

Graduate Diploma of Teaching English in Schools to Speakers of Other Languages (TESSOL)
This programme provides a specialised qualification for early childhood, primary and secondary teachers. It is suitable for teachers of recent migrants and for those teachers whose students are not reaching their academic potential because of language needs. The eight courses that comprise the qualification aim to give teachers effective and practical techniques for enhancing students' language development through the curriculum. This practical approach is underpinned by a sound theoretical basis. Attendance is once weekly for the four core compulsory courses at a time to suit working teachers. Generally teachers complete these courses over four semesters (two years). The four core elective courses are generally taken as holiday block courses.
