About us
Welcome to the School of Arts, Languages and Literacies.
The School of Arts, Languages and Literacies offers leading edge education for aspiring and qualified teachers in visual arts, music, drama, and languages. We also offer specialist postgraduate qualifications in Literacy, TESSOL, and Reading Recovery and are committed to teaching and research in all these areas in early childhood, primary, secondary and postgraduate contexts.
The School of Arts, Languages and Literacies has a dedicated staff, many of whom have national and international reputations in their fields. Our staff believe in passing on their passion to our students, to motivate learning and increase the understanding of the inter-related disciplines we teach.
In addition to contributing to teacher education and postgraduate studies, the school offers three specialist teacher education programmes:
- Graduate Diploma of Teaching English in Schools to Speakers of Other Languages (TESSOL)
- Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Literacy) - a qualification for Resource Teachers: Literacy and others teaching in this field
- Graduate and Postgraduate Diplomas of Education developed specifically for the training of Reading Recovery Tutors and Trainers
Research and scholarship within the school focuses on raising achievement in diverse areas: language and literacy at early childhood, primary and secondary levels; learning languages; English as an additional language; bilingual education; multicultural arts education; multiliteracies (including arts-based); embodied teaching and learning; and research into children’s literature. Our education research is complemented by the Woolf Fisher Research Centre, led by Professor Stuart McNaughton.
The School of Arts, Languages and Literacies is dedicated to ensuring that students who graduate from our programmes have developed a depth of knowledge and commitment to ongoing learning.
