Faculty of Education

How to apply

Follow this process to apply for the EdD programme.

Admission to the Faculty and to the University

There are two related parts to the EdD admission and enrolment process:

  1. The first is an assessment by the Faculty of Education of your suitability (given your qualifications, relevant professional experience, proposed topic, and the availability of appropriate supervisors) for enrolment in a research programme within the EdD degree.
  2. The second involves establishing your eligibility to be admitted to a programme of doctoral study at The University of Auckland.

When to apply

The Research Portfolio component of the EdD programme usually begins in February or early March of each academic year. There is only one new EdD cohort each year. It is advisable to make plans well in advance and to schedule an appointment with the EdD Programme Leader some months prior to Christmas. Applicants with overseas qualifications need to allow extra time for their applications to be processed.

Note: As the programme is currently limited to 12 or fewer students per cohort, on a first-come, first-served basis, it is best to apply in July-August to ensure a place in the following year’s programme.

Expression of Interest

  1. Candidates who feel they meet the entry criteria should complete an online Expression of Interest (EOI).
Go to the online Expression of Interest
  2. Either before completing the EOI, or during the EOI process, candidates should arrange an interview with the Programme Leader, Dr Vicki Carpenter v.carpenter@auckland.ac.nz or +64 9 6223 8899 ext 48511.

The EdD Programme Leader will discuss your proposed research topic and possible supervisors. It may be necessary in some cases to advise candidates that there is no-one suitably qualified and available to supervise a proposed topic. If you are inquiring about admission to the programme from overseas, you will need to establish contact with prospective supervisors via e-mail. Information about Faculty of Education staff research interests can be found here: www.education.auckland.ac.nz/supervision-register
  3. The EdD Programme Leader will consider the items submitted through the Expression of Interest (EOI) and make a recommendation to the Associate Dean (Postgraduate). Please note that the Faculty of Education does not make the final decision about your entry to the degree. All registrations must be approved by the Board of Graduate Studies, you will receive an official letter from the Graduate Centre confirming your registration in the degree.
  4. Dr Vicki Carpenter and/or the coordinator of your cohort will contact you regarding dates for the first Research Portfolio meeting. Please note that indicative dates for 2010 are published on this website:

As the EdD demands intensive study and debate at an advanced level, we encourage all EdD candidates to begin a rigorous reading programme in their nominated research area as soon as possible.
