Disability services
The Faculty of Education welcomes students with a range of disabilities. Our aim is to make your time here as enjoyable and successful as possible and we provide facilities and support services to meet your individual needs.
Support for Interview / Selection
If you are a prospective student, we can assist you prepare your application and during the interview and selection process.
Funding advice
We work closely with Workbridge and can help you apply for any funding you may need.
Note takers
We will arrange trained note-takers to support you during lectures.
New Zealand Sign language interpreters
Interpreters attend lectures to support deaf students with communication.
Alternative format materials
We can provide lecture materials (hand-outs, notes, overheads etc.) in formats such as Braille, large print or on computer disc.
Tutoring support
We can arrange one-on-one tutoring if you need extra support with your academic studies.
Support for exams
This includes providing alternative examination venues, a reader/writer or arranging extra time.
Support for field-based placements
We can liaise with the schools or other centres you attend as part of your practicum requirements.
Access around campus
Wheelchair access is available to all buildings and lecture theatres. If you experience difficulty with access on certain routes, talk to the Outreach Co-ordinator for Students and Staff with Disabilities.
Specialist furniture and equipment
This can be arranged where required during lectures or while studying on campus.
Computer facilities
There is a computer in the Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library programmed with Accessibility software.
Hearing amplification systems
FM hearing amplification and loop systems can be provided in lecture theatres.
Disabled parking
Dedicated parking spaces which are closer to lecture theatres are available in areas around 7 campus. The Outreach Co-ordinator for Students and Staff with Disabilities can help arrange this.
Disabled toilets
There are toilet facilities with wheelchair access on campus as indicated on the map.

Rebekah Williams, Outreach Co-ordinator for Students and Staff with Disabilities, liaises with students with disabilities regarding particular support needs they may have to fulfil their course requirements. These needs might include support with enrolment or examination requirements, individual needs for interpreters or note-takers for Deaf students, or support personnel for students with physical disabilities. Rebekah also liaises with staff at the faculty and can advise of special provisions and resources available here. Whatever the need or requirement, help and support is available for all students.
Students are urged to contact Rebekah before pre-enrolment and before beginning courses or sitting exams so that any particular support needs can be arranged.
Disability services also works closely with support personnel within the faculty, as well as tertiary co-ordinators and outside agencies such as Workbridge and the Deaf Association of N.Z. in providing advocacy for students with disabilities.
