Nau mai, haere mai ki te Kura Akoranga. Nga mihi nui ki a koutou.

As a Faculty of Education we are proud to host The University of Auckland Centre for Educational Leadership.

The Centre has grown out of a strong tradition of partnership between the University and the school sector in the region that began with the establishment of the Principals Centre in 1985. Its work has now been expanded to include other educational leaders, the early childhood sector and other regions, in its work.

Consistent with the research and development mission of the Faculty, the work of the Centre is informed by high quality research that links educational leadership and student outcomes. Through the integration of this research with practice the Centre aims to create the conditions that make it possible for educational leaders to have a greater positive impact on the achievement and well being of the learners for whom they are responsible.

In its short life so far the Centre has achieved major accomplishments. Membership has grown significantly; there has been extended engagement with educational leaders nationally and internationally through research informed seminar programmes, workshops and consultancies; and new professional development contracts have been won.

The 2012 seminar programme builds on these successes and reflects the ongoing commitment of the Faculty and the Centre to having an enduring impact on leaders, and on the students and children they serve.

Effective leadership produces effective educational outcomes

National and international research emphasises the need for effective educational leadership and reveals how closely related excellent leadership is to high quality and high equity outcomes for 21st Century education systems.

The new Centre will both reflect and respond to the changes that are occurring in educational leadership. Here in New Zealand recent major initiatives in educational policy, programmes and research recognise the importance of this leadership to achieving national priorities in the school and early childhood sectors.

Bridging the gap between research and practice

As a response, we have decided to create a world class educational leadership centre that is inclusive of all levels of educational leaders in all types of schools, educational organisations and early childhood centres. Its work will be informed by high quality national and international research which links educational leadership to student outcomes. We particularly want to make a major impact on the relationship between research and practice in educational leadership and the influence of educational leaders on student outcomes.
