Why choose the Faculty of Education?

The Faculty of Education offers innovative programmes in teacher education, social work and human services (youth work and disability studies). Our programmes give you the skills, knowledge and professional base to take your interest in working with people and turn it into a rewarding career.

About the faculty

The faculty was established in 2004 when the widely respected Auckland College of Education and The University of Auckland's School of Education amalgamated to become the Faculty of Education. The faculty combines the strengths of both of these institutions giving us research-led expertise as well as 125 years experience as quality teacher and professional education specialists and almost 25 years experience in social services education.
We offer the total package when it comes to education. In addition to the undergraduate (pre-service) programmes listed in this prospectus, the faculty also offers postgraduate programmes, professional development opportunities, consultancy and support services for teachers, schools, principals and those in social services. We're with you every step of the way and have strong links with the community we serve. Very few education providers can boast the full-spectrum of services we offer.

The University of Auckland

Did you know that The University of Auckland is New Zealand's highest-ranking university and in the top one percent of the world's universities?* We are highly regarded for our quality programmes and our leading research.
Studying at The University of Auckland gives you access to the latest research and excellent resources. Graduating from The University of Auckland equips you with a reputable, internationally recognised qualification.

General Education

We recognise the value of being a well-rounded student. We are the first and only university in New Zealand to give students this opportunity through General Education.
The General Education programme has been designed to produce graduates with knowledge of fields outside of their area of study. You'll be able to choose from a range of subjects and you'll be better prepared for the workforce with a broader range of critical thinking skills to complement your specialist knowledge.

The General Education website lets you view the courses currently available for each degree. Depending on your undergraduate degree or diploma or the campus you are at, you will take one or two courses from the General Education schedules.

Research-led learning and practical experience

You will study at a university with a first-rate research reputation and strong links between teaching, learning and research. You will learn from teachers who combine knowledge of the latest developments in their field with a passion for their work.
We also ensure you get opportunities to experience first-hand what it's like to work in schools, centres or social services agencies so you have a sound understanding of what your future career is actually like. When you graduate, you'll have the knowledge as well as the practical experience to begin your career and really make a difference.

Supportive environment

We provide the tools and support to help you reach your goals during your time with us.
Take advantage of the resources, support and facilities available to you to ensure your enjoyment as well as success in your study (see p23 for information on student support services).
Whether you are interested in teaching or social services, you'll have many opportunities to mix with like-minded people who are as passionate about the same profession as you are.

We also offer flexible study options for selected programmes, designed for people who do not live locally or who need to juggle work, family or other commitments with their study.
