"I’ve always wanted to work with children and chose the Bachelor of Social Work because I want to be a child protection worker and help victims of child abuse. I started by training as a teacher but realised that to really reach out to children in need at a deeper level you need to be working within the law in a profession like social work. I liked the idea that you can specialise and the degree is very relevant and diverse - we study papers in family, communications, counselling and law that prepare us to work with different cultures and get out there and make a difference."
Amy Katterns is currently studying for a Bachelor of Social Work majoring in Child and Family Practice. Besides supporting young people in New Zealand she plans to use her qualification to travel and work overseas, and to do further postgraduate study.
