With the Foundation Certificate Tohu Tüäpapa Mätauranga, you can gain essential learning and tertiary study skills and develop your te reo Mäori skills at the same time.
This is a specialist foundation programme to help bridge you into tertiary study at the Faculty of Education.

Programme Highlights

  • Successful completion of this certificate makes you eligible to apply for entry into the BEd (Tchg) Huarahi Mäori Specialisation or any other undergraduate programme at the Faculty of Education.
  • Great opportunity to develop your Mäori language, tikanga Mäori and study skills.
  • Learn in small groups in a supportive whänau-based environment at the School of Te Puna Wänanga.

What you'll be studying

  • you will develop your te reo Mäori and tikanga Mäori skills
  • you will also learn literacy, numeracy and further study skills to prepare you for tertiary study.
  • You will study in a whänau-based environment. Emphasis is placed on supporting and assisting you throughout the duration of your study.

Where can it take you?

This certificate is specifically designed to make you eligible for selection into our Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Mäori Specialisation - a programme that qualifies you to teach in Mäori immersion and bilingual schools as well as mainstream primary and intermediate schools. This certificate can also make you eligible for selection into other undergraduate programmes offered by the Faculty of Education.

Even if you don’t go onto further study, the certificate will give you lifelong learning skills. You will have improved your proficiency in te reo Mäori, which can open up opportunities in other careers.



How do you get in?

Applicants must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident of New Zealand
    and
  • have completed NCEA Level 2 at a New Zealand secondary school or its equivalent
    or
  • be over 20 years of age.

Personal references and an interview are normally required of all applicants.
