If you want a rewarding career working with people with disabilities, the Bachelor of Human Services (BHumServ) will provide you with the skills to manage and provide leadership and advocacy in disability services. This programme is also suitable for people who are already working in the field.

What you'll be studying

In the first year you will:

  • study psychology and sociology for human services, human development, and professional communication skills
  • study disability and support as well as theories of disability, social understandings and history
  • begin your study of applied professional practice.

Over the next two years, you will:

  • build on your theoretical knowledge base
  • study courses such as leadership, management and policy, sociology of disability, social psychology, families and policy, behaviour analysis and support
  • have opportunities to apply your learning in practice
  • study two courses from the General Education schedule, allowing you to pursue interests outside your field of study.

You'll gain the skills and knowledge to better support disabled people and their families. You'll also be able to work in a wide range of other human service settings.


A BHumServ with a Disability Studies major could see you working in government departments and ministries, private services and trusts supporting disabled people, schools, tertiary institutions, service providers (eg, IHC, NZCCS, RNZFB) and mental health services.
