"I’ve done numerous jobs and even had my own business, but every day was a slog with no challenge and I didn’t enjoy what I was doing. I wanted to make a difference in the community and for my iwi. As a parent supporting our three girls in their sports and education, people would say to me ‘Les, you would make a great teacher,’ so I realised maybe that’s where my
talent was. The course is challenging - you’ve got to go home and do the homework and the hard yards, but it’s really great because it broadens your perspective on learning and opens your eyes about how to teach in a more effective way. I can see now that learning is very much a reciprocal process. Now when I go home I tell my kaumatua that I’m not driving trucks anymore. When they hear that I’m going to be teaching in te reo Mäori they are just blown away."
