What you'll be studying

In the first year you will:

  • be introduced to the study of education, the New Zealand curriculum and effective teaching practice
  • learn about social and learning contexts specific to early childhood education
  • work alongside experienced teachers during your practical placements to develop your teaching practice

In subsequent years, courses include:

  • more advanced study of educational theory and practice via tutorials, lectures and group work
  • more practical experience within early childhood settings
  • one course from the General Education schedule allowing you to pursue interests outside of your main area of study (may vary by campus/study mode).

Choose your career...

Successful completion of this qualification makes you eligible to apply for provisional registration as a practising professional early childhood teacher. You will be qualified to teach in all early childhood services in New Zealand, including early childhood care and education centres, crèches and kindergartens.
With a degree qualification, there is the potential for leadership or management positions. You will also be eligible to earn a salary at degree level.
