Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary)
If you already have a degree or equivalent qualification recognised by The University of Auckland you can qualify to teach in primary and intermediate schools after just one year of intensive full-time study. Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Mäori Specialisation
Qualified teachers who can communicate in te reo Mäori are in high demand. This degree will qualify you to teach in Mäori medium and bilingual classrooms as well as mainstream primary and intermediate schools.
Want to be a secondary school teacher?
Do you have a passion for sport, health, and helping people develop their physical skills? Consider this programme which will give you specialised skills and in-depth knowledge in the field of physical education.
If you already have a bachelors degree or equivalent qualification recognised by The University of Auckland you can qualify to teach in your area of interest in secondary schools after just one year of full-time study.
Are you fluent in te reo Mäori and want to teach?

See yourself helping people in the community?
Qualified social workers are in high demand in New Zealand and overseas. Perhaps you see yourself working in social services and if so, studying Human Services will give you the qualifications to support young people to lead valued lives in the community, or provide quality support services for disabled people and their families.
Already working as a teacher and looking to move up to a degree?
Then enrol in the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Teachers Specialisation, a degree programme created especially for working teachers. Courses are designed for experienced teachers and will advancing your career and qualify you for Q3 salary status. Contact the faculty for more information.
Other pathways in education
If you are interested in education but not sure if you want to teach consider Education as a major or minor or an elective subject within the Bachelor of Arts degree. This qualification will give you a sound knowledge of varied aspects of education and can open doors to a wide variety of careers. You can even choose to complete part of your degree overseas at one of more than 80 universities as part of our 360 Auckland Abroad programme.
This is a non-teaching degree, so to become a teacher you would need to do a further year of study at Graduate Diploma level to qualify as a teacher at primary or secondary level.
Bridging programmes are also available
The Faculty of Education offers foundation programmes to help students prepare for University study in education. Successful completion allows admission to The University of Auckland for Faculty of Education programmes (providing all additional requirements are met).
You may not be thinking much beyond your first year of study but once you graduate, there are several ways you can add to your qualifications. You may even choose to go on to study at masters and doctoral level. Each step helps you advance your career and increase your salary prospects.
