For SCOTT RAY, the decision to undertake tertiary study as a mature student was driven by the desire for personal learning and development. When life circumstances allowed him the freedom to take on a new challenge, he enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts at The University of Auckland.

After trying a few different subjects, Scott found a real interest in learning and language and decided to double major in Education and Linguistics. "Language is key to so many areas of life, and it has been really interesting to learn about language acquisition, how language is learnt and why some people can learn language faster than others," explains Scott.
In 2006 Scott graduated with a BA, however his journey in education hasn’t finished there. He is now completing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) majoring in Education and hopes to go on to a Master’s Degree. "I am enjoying my study so much that I want to continue learning and exploring areas of Education," he says.

The experience as a mature student has been a positive one for Scott. "I was initially terrified at the thought of beginning study as an older student, but by applying the life skills I’ve learnt outside of university, and through the support and encouragement from lecturers, the experience has been rewarding and worthwhile."
