Teaching allows MARGARET MARTIN to do what she loves best - help others.

Margaret held a Bachelor of Education (Teaching). Her love of teaching brought her back to complete an honours programme which she is studying part-time over two years. Margaret says

"The academic staff are approachable and are always available and willing to support the students. The atmosphere is very friendly." She says the less formal environment suits her and she enjoys the mix of age groups and backgrounds she has encountered.

"Anything I can do to help children learn, I will do it. I’m discovering a whole new world of knowledge. I just love it," says Margaret who is a teacher at Birdwood School (Ranui, Auckland). The honours programme allows Margaret to focus on her special interest areas, mathematics and assessment. Margaret leads Birdwood’s advanced numeracy project, and the honours programme further deepened her knowledge and honed her practice.

Margaret has a real empathy with the children and creates a fabulous environment for learning. In the largely Polynesian, decile one school, Margaret is also a strong role model for girls. As a new teacher in 2001, she taught years seven and eight at Birdwood. Margaret is the health and physical education curriculum leader and also leads a Pasifika cultural group. She is a tutor teacher for beginning teachers.
