There are four specialisations offered within The Graduate Diploma in Special Education
Core and specialist courses from the Hearing Impairment, Vision impairment and Special Teaching Needs specialisations will be offered full-time. The Early Intervention specialisation will be offered part-time over two years.
The Graduate Diploma in Special Education replaces the four individual diplomas in Early Intervention, Special Teaching Needs, Hearing Impairment and Vision Impairment for specialist teachers offered by the former Auckland College of Education and now the Faculty of Education. Students who were previously enrolled in any of the Diploma courses and now wish to complete should consult Joanne Walker (Programme Leader) to discuss equivalent courses under the new qualification.
The Graduate Diploma in Special Education offers comprehensive professional development opportunities for educators from early childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary areas. Teachers who hold a bachelors degree, or advanced diploma of teaching, and complete a stand alone level 7 120 point qualification may be eligible for Q3+ salary status. Early Intervention Teachers with the Graduate Diploma in Special Education may progress to the next salary step.
Those enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Special Education complete two core courses as well as courses in one of the four specialisations.
