Money matters

There are a variety of options available to help you fund your university study. Student loans and allowances are available through StudyLink, and there are a number of scholarships, awards and grants on offer to help you.

Scholarships and University awards

Many postgraduate and professional development courses offered by The Faculty of Education qualify for Ministry of Education grants or study awards. Contact the Ministry of Education to find out if you meet the criteria for Ministry assistance.

You may also be eligible to receive a Faculty of Education tuition fees bursary. We will consider your potential to succeed in the intended programme, your financial circumstances, and/or your potential to advance the interests of under-represented groups in the field of education.
Call The University of Auckland on 0800 61 62 63 for more information.

A great range of other university awards - including Access awards for financial hardship - and scholarships are available. See www.auckland.ac.nz/scholarships or phone (09) 373 7599 ext 87494.

Student Allowances

Student allowances are paid to assist New Zealand students enrolled in a recognised full-time course of study. You may be eligible depending on your parental income, personal circumstances and age. International students, and students who have had permanent residency status for less than two years, are not eligible. A student allowance is a grant and does not need to be repaid, unlike a student loan.

Student loans

Government Student Loans are how most people fund their tertiary study. To be eligible for a student loan you must be a New Zealand citizen or have been granted permanent resident status.
You may apply for tuition fees, course-related costs (for example, books, stationery and travel) and living costs (living costs are not available to part-time students). Loans need to be repaid and will accrue interest.

Applications for loans should be made at least one month before study begins. Full information about loans and allowances is available by contacting StudyLink on 0800 88 99 00 or visiting their website at http://www.studylink.govt.nz
