Research Interests

Measurement/assessment, research methodologies, Maori word formation, Maori vocabulary, Maori phonetics/phonology, Maori-medium education and Maori language acquisition. Educational achievement of Maori and minority students.

Major Research Projects 2008-2009

  • The impact of sound change on the rhythm of Maori: women’s role in language transmission and change. A Marsden fund project (2008-2010) building on earlier Marsden project (The pronunciation of Maori and the influence of English: A longitudinal study(2004-2006).

    This project involves researchers from the University of Auckland, the University of Canterbury and the University of Waikato.

  • Teacher Education Students’ Knowledge and Attitudes to Maori Language, Maori Culture & the Treaty of Waitangi. This is a quantitative/qualitative research programme studying first year students at the University of Auckland's Faculty of Education (Epsom Campus). I am the principal investigator, assisted by other researchers in the Faculty of Education.

  • Building Evaluative Capacity in Schooling Improvement Project.
    A Joint Faculty of Education/NZCER project examining school clusters especially their abilities to build their own evaluative capacity. I am a member of a large research team.
