Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary)
As a secondary school teacher I taught English and had a particular interest in teaching low literacy ability English classes
I have an ongoing interest in developing junior and senior English programmes for students who struggle with reading and writing in secondary schools.
In terms of pre-service teacher education, I enjoy teaching sociological frameworks for understanding the structures and processes involved in schooling and education. I believe that pre-service teachers should be encouraged to value ideas; education is about ideas!
Currently I am interested in philosophical questions and issues in education. I wish to examine the sorts of 'alternative English' courses that schools develop in order to meet the needs of underachieving students; in particular: the ways in which some of these courses may further disempower and limit the choices of certain students.
My background study and interests have been in the sociology of education, feminist theory, political and social justice issues in education, inlcuding the pedagogy of Paulo Freire. My postgraduate research was theoretical and used some qualitative research methodology (feminist research methodology, poststructuralist discourse theory and discourse analysis).
