Teaching Area/Interests
Teaching interests are in sociology, teaching effectiveness for low decile schools, in particular teaching for diverse classrooms and the politics of education. I am also involved in art education.
I am particularly interested in primary and secondary school pedagogy dedicated to bringing about a transformation in educational and economic outcomes for those groups of students currently under-represented in degree-level education in New Zealand.
Research Interests (area & methodologies)
- Effective pedagogy in low decile secondary school art departments.
- An ACE funded collaborative research project: ‘Kaiako-toa’ which examined beliefs and attitudes of highly effective teachers in low decile primary schools.
- Te Kotahitanga, the role of teachers within the project and issues of sustainability
- 'Expert' teachers in secondary schools
