Helen’s teaching and research interests are in assessment and learning. She has worked extensively with teachers at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels of study. Currently she is teaching courses that contribute to the B.Ed (Tch), GradDipEd, PGDipEd and M.Ed.
Helen's M.Ed. Admin thesis investigated teachers’ understandings of school based assessment and the ways in which they utilised assessment information for both formative and summative purposes. Her research in the field has continued with involvement in two ACE funded research projects: School Entry Assessment and Teachers’ Understanding and Use of Assessment Information in the Literacy Learning. In 2005/2006 she was part of research team involved in a two-year TLRI funded project that investigated teachers’ and students’ conceptions of assessment and feedback (CAF) and their impact on learning and pedagogy. Currently Helen is in her 4th year of doctoral study. The focus of this research is on teachers' understandings and use of feedback to enhance children's learning.
Helen has thirty five years teaching experience at the primary and tertiary levels of education including: five years experience in Special Education; eighteen years experience in positions of responsibility including assistant principal, deputy principal and head of department.
