Postgraduate - Master of Education; Bachelor of Education (Teaching) (Honours); Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
Teacher Education - Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Teachers’ Specialisation.
I currently teach in the area of assessment in an undergraduate teacher education programme (Teachers’ Specialsiation) and in postgraduate programmes (Masters, Honours and PG Diploma). Key aspects addressed within these programmes include assessment for learning, feedback, assessment of learning, reporting to parents, assessors’ qualitative judgements and criteria-based / standards-referenced assessment. In addition, I have established within the Faculty, and co-ordinated and taught in, a cohort-based approach to Bachelor of Education (Teaching) (Honours) dissertations.
Supervisions of Doctorates, Masters theses and Honours dissertations have been successfully carried out and completed in the areas of social studies education, feedback, reporting to parents, and student self-assessment.
My research interests and experiences lie in the areas of assessment and learning, in a range of educational contexts (early childhood, primary, secondary and higher education) and curriculum areas. Recent national and international publications have included research on the reluctance of lecturers to award a failing grade, student teachers’ discourse on assessment, teachers’ oral feedback in written language and year 8 students’ knowledge and understanding about New Zealand society. I am currently working with a colleague on a National Education Monitoring Probe Project investigating intra and inter assessor reliablity in the conducting of one-to-one interviews with years 4 and 8 students, in Social Studies.
My research expertise and experience lies in the use of naturalistic field study, ethnography, case study, grounded theory and qualitative strategies eg: interviews, participant observation. I have a particular interest in the analysis of qualitative data.
