Teaching Area/Interests

When teaching in schools I have taught primarily in the middle school area [Yrs 4 to 6] and with a particular interest in mathematics and the beliefs children held about mathematics in their lives.

At the Faculty of Education I have taught Learning Theories and Assessment of Education within the legacy programme

Research Interests (area & methodologies)

My MEd research focused on children's beliefs about, rather than attitudes to, mathematics both in the school and beyond the school gate - this was investigated through qualitative methodologies.

From this has grown my interest in furthering my understanding of children's beliefs about mathematics and connection-making between the mathematics of the classroom and the mathematics of the world beyond the classroom, with a focus on the use of homework/homestudy worksheets.

Other information, interests or things that drive you

Beyond the school gate, my interests range widely across the technologies of the past. I have a particular interest in the technologies of transport, particularly land, because of the dramatic changes brought to society as these technologies developed. I am a Life Member of MoTaT and have been involved with the museum since the late 1960s.
