History, Sociology and Politics of Education, Effective teaching, especially for low-decile students, Language and Cultural factors affecting teaching and learning.


Research Interests (area & methodologies)

Youth mentoring and the role of this additional resource in supporting the work of teachers and families and addressing barriers to achievement.


Professional Links

Co-founder and secretary of The Youth Mentoring Trust, Trustee of the Great Potentials Foundation - a non-profit organisation providing educational support services to children and young people in both school and family environments.

  • MA Hons - The University of Auckland

Previous professional experience (prior to present position)

Secondary school teacher, first full-time position, Edgecumbe College 1965. Senior management positions in both secondary schools of Otara 1970-86, Principal of Penrose High School, 1986-99
