Denis joined the Faculty of Education in 1991 after 13 years teaching Physics and Junior Science at Auckland Grammar School. In 1997 he took a year's leave and taught Physics and Junior Science at Avondale College. He currently teaches Physics and Science Education classes in Secondary programmes and Science Education classes in Primary programmes.
In 2001 Denis was awarded a Bronze Science and Technology Medal for "outstanding contribution to curriculum, professional and resource development in science education with particular regard to physics".

- Member of the Expert Panel for the development of Achievement Standards in Physics

- Specialist Adviser (Physics) for Building Science Concepts series published by Learning Media
- Organiser of the Auckland Physics Teachers' Support Group
Denis' professional interests are the nature of Science, effective teaching of Physics and Physics Education research in general, curriculum and resource development in secondary school Physics and school Electronics and Electronics Education.
Currently Denis is completing an MSc(Science Education) through Curtin University, Perth.
