I joined the University after a career of teaching science and biology in secondary schools in London, Christchurch and Wellington.

Professional Interests:

I am particularly interested in biotechnology education having completed my doctorate (1997) in this area, Realising the technology curriculum: professional development in biotechnology education. Recently (2005) I have completed a literature review about biotechnology education world-wide that is available from the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER). Since then I have been researching communication issues about biotechnology when the science the community talks to the public. I have just published a book that proposes a model for enhancing communication http://www.sensepublishers.com

At present I am working with Vicki Compton on developing two new strands (The Nature of Technology and Technological Knowledge) for the Technology Curriculum. Background information and papers can be found on TKI and Techlink websites.

I have been involved in the development of a classroom at the Liggins Institute where students have an opportunity to meet scientists and carry out practical work that they may not encounter at school (Gel Electrophoresis and PCR).

Research interests:

  • Biotechnology Education
  • Public Understanding of Science
  • Learning in Science Education
  • Curriculum development in Technology Education
  • Narrative research about scientists’ lives
