Biography

Libby Limbrick completed a B.A in English and Education before undertaking a Diploma of Teaching and teaching in primary schools. Her MA thesis developed and evaluated a paired reading peer tutoring programme to raise achievement of reading for underachieving tutors and tutees. Twenty years on this programme is still being used in a number of schools in New Zealand. Libby’s interest in deaf education influenced her PhD thesis which investigated the reading and language development of profoundly deaf children While undertaking the research for her PhD Libby taught in the Department of Education from 1984-88. For five years following completion of the PhD she worked in Auckland. In 1993 Libby was appointed Head of the Reading and Language Department at the Auckland College of Education, and in time was appointed the Head of the Centre for Languages and Languages before the amalgamation of ACE with the University of Auckland. During 2001 to 2004 Libby led a consortium of Auckland College of Education, Christchurch College of Education, Dunedin College to win a major contract with the Ministry of Education to develop and implement a qualification for a new position Resource Teachers: Literacy. She continues to coordinate this qualification, a Post Graduate Diploma of Education ( Literacy specialism) which is taken by newly appointed RT:Lits, and by a range of teachers interested in literacy education . Libby’s research interests while broadly based in literacy education, have more recently focused on the teaching of writing. She presents regularly at national and international conferences.
