Introduction
Barbara teaches in the Secondary Education Programme, preparing students to teach secondary History, Social Studies, Classical Studies and Art History.
Educational History
Barbara taught at Selwyn College, Kohimarama for 18 years, holding Head of Department and Senior Management positions. She has been teaching in education programmes for the past 8 years, at Massey University, in the former Auckland College of Education and at Auckland University. She is currently completing a Master of Arts degree and also holds a Bachelor of Town Planning degree.
Area of Expertise
Barbara has taught History, Art History, Social Studies, Classical Studies and Dance and has led many developments in Art History at a national level.
She is involved in curriculum development and in the writing of NCEA Achievement Standards for Art History. She has also been an examiner and marker for NCEA Art History exams and a marker for the former Bursary and School Certificate examinations in History.
Research and Professional Interest
Particular areas of interest include assessment practices and moderation, and curriculum development. Barbara is currently researching into the use of visual imagery for effective teaching in History.
Current Teaching
Barbara teaches the secondary diploma courses in History (EDCURSEC 630 and EDCURSEC 631), Social Studies (EDCURSEC 624 and EDCURSEC 625), Art History (EDCURSEC 655) and Classical Studies (EDCURSEC 677)
Recent Publications
Publications include teacher handbooks for NCEA and Scholarship programmes, and materials for the New Zealand History Teachers’ Association Journal, the Auckland History Teachers’ Association Newsletter and the New Zealand Art History Teachers’ Association Newsletter.
