Roger is currently an Honorary Research Fellow, a position he has held since he took (early) retirement in March, 2003. He does no teaching nor is he able to take on any new thesis students. That said, he is available to advise potential thesis students as he has a long history of supervision at both Masters and Doctoral levels. He is also available to discuss and /or advise on new research projects with beginning researchers, especially those involving questionnaires, interviews and case studies as part of the methodology.

After gaining degrees in English and French at Victoria, Auckland, and Poitiers (France), Roger began his career as a secondary school teacher (English and Languages). He subsequently worked for seven years at the former Secondary Teachers’ College in Epsom. During this time he began part-time study in Education. He then worked in the former Department of Education at the University of Auckland, where he completed a PhD in Education, focusing on error analysis in secondary school foreign language learning. Between 1993 and 1998 he held the position of Director of the university’s Centre for Continuing Education, before returning to the School - and subsequently the Faculty - of Education.

Roger has researched and published on a range of topics, including languages policy, curriculum and assessment, often seen through the theoretical lens of comparative education. He continues to have a general interest in these areas, and is currently investigating structure and agency theory as applied to the development and implementation of languages policies. He has also been involved in a number of evaluation contracts mainly for the Department/Ministry of Education and the NZ Qualifications Authority. Over all, these contracts have involved primary, secondary and tertiary institutions and have involved a range of educational areas and projects.
