Pasifika Education recognizes its leadership role in Pacific education and development. Such leadership brings with it the responsibilities to advance educational knowledge; improve educational practice and enhance service and support systems in Pasifika education. Our approaches to meeting such responsibilities will be informed by the development and use of our own unique perspectives and paradigms - which are a product of our core values. Our core values will also guide the way we navigate professional and cultural networks in order to establish strategic collaborations that will enable us to meet our responsibilities.
The Faculty of Education offers two qualifications with Pasifika specialisations:
These specialisations in Early Childhood Education Pasifika link directly with community demand and government initiatives to boost quality in Pasifika and general ECE. Graduates of these programmes are qualified to teach in diverse ECE settings in New Zealand, and have experience and skills in Pasifika approaches to teaching and learning.
The goals of the Pasifika specialisations are:
Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) Pasifika Specialisation
This diploma specialisation was developed for those early childhood education students who wish to learn their professional skills through Pasifika approaches to teaching and learning combined with national and international best practice. In the final year courses there is an emphasis on applied studies.
Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Early Childhood Pasifika Specialisation
This degree specialisation was developed for those early childhood education students who wish to learn their professional skills through Pasifika approaches to teaching and learning combined with national and international best practice. In the final year courses there is an emphasis on research and theory. Graduates are eligible for a higher salary band (Q3) than Diploma graduates. In addition they will be eligible to apply to undertake graduate studies.
Faculty has an exciting range of courses that cover aspects of Pasifika knowledge and experience. These courses are informed by the most recent research, community perspectives and are taught by staff who are leaders in the relevant fields.
Please note that some courses are delivered by experts from School of Social, Policy and Pasifika Education Studies, while others are taught with or by staff located in other Schools within the Faculty of Education.
The School of Social, Policy and Pasifika Education Studies is well-placed to provide supervision for postgraduate research at Masters and Doctoral level.
Opportunities to engage with Pacific education exist within different curriculum and professional practice courses across all the Faculty’s programmes.

Bachelor of Education, Primary Teaching:
It is possible, in the third and final year of the BEd primary teaching degree to choose a suite of three courses with a specific focus on preparing teachers to teach Pasifika and other ethnic minority learners in urban schools within New Zealand.
This is an exciting and highly relevant initiative for the Faculty of Education. At the last census (2006) Pacific peoples in New Zealand made up 6.9% of the total population. 67% of Pacific peoples live in the Auckland Region - which is approximately 14.4% of Auckland’s total population.
This proportion will increase, given current demographic trends. The Ministry of Education has projected that by 2051 one in five children in New Zealand will be a Pacific child. The proportion of children in schools in the Auckland region who are Pasifika will be much higher. Such projections, from a Ministry of Education perspective, "provides a sense of urgency to ensure the educational needs of Pasifika children are met….." (Ministry of Education website).
If enrolment numbers are sufficient, this suite of courses will be offered for the first time in 2008.
