The term human services is an inclusive term covering government and non-government social services, social work, disability support, youth work, community work, counselling and community work. Graduates from our programmes may work in services for particular communities: those with health or welfare needs, services set up to support disabled people or those living with mental illness to have the opportunity to live valued lives.

If there is one unifying concept behind all of these it is the idea of empowerment - that people of integrity, who possess excellent skills and a strong ethical base can make a positive difference supporting those who face challenges, to live the fullest lives possible. The programmes in the Faculty of Education aspire to excellence and in doing so listen closely to the individuals, families and communities to whom our graduates provide a service.

‘E raka te mauï, e raka te katau
A community can use all the skills of its people’

Liz Beddoe
Head of Social Work and Human Services
