Planning to return to teaching?Has it been some years since you stood in front of a class of students?
If you want to return to your career as a primary or secondary school teacher but need to get up-to-date with recent developments in New Zealand education, then this is the course for you.
The Faculty of Education has been contracted by the Ministry of Education to provide retraining for teachers intending to return to teaching. This initiative has been developed to fulfil the growing demand for teachers within New Zealand schools.
The Teacher Retraining Programme has been developed by the Faculty of Education, at The University of Auckland, in consultation with schools and curriculum leaders.
It aims to explore the most up-to-date issues and challenges in teaching in today’s schools.
It will help returning teachers see the context and issues of education clearly and to adopt problem-solving strategies to identify and meet the challenges of teaching and administering classroom programmes.
This course is free. Its focus is on bringing teachers up-todate with recent developments in New Zealand education.
At the core of the Teacher Retraining Programme is a six month part-time, flexible training course comprising 10 modules.
The distance learning course combines site-based work in schools with a theory component. Supporting workshops are also held during the programme at the faculty.
On entry to the programme, it is expected New Zealand teachers will have applied for teacher registration through the Teacher Registration Board. Overseas trained teachers must hold current New Zealand registration. At any stage, teachers are free to apply for jobs in the usual way by responding to schools’ advertised vacancies.
The Retrained Teacher Time Allowance is available to boards employing New Zealand trained teachers who have completed or are currently completing a course of teacher retrained approved by the Secretary of Education. The allowance is available for a maximum of 12 months.
The Overseas Teacher Time Allowance is available to boards employing overseas trained teachers to their first teaching position in a New Zealand state or state integrated school. The allowance is available for a maximum of 10 weeks.
Upon enrolment, each teacher will be assigned to a study group and introduced to their school and school professional adviser.
Learning materials are issued at the beginning of the course. While teachers work at their own pace with faculty and school support, deadlines are set as targets to work towards. It involves approximately 360 hours of total study time.
The course can fit flexibly around work in schools, but teachers in non-teaching fulltime jobs will need to arrange time off to complete the school-based components of the programme.
There are no exams or essays. Work is documented, and tutorials with school advisers ensure that course materials and school-based work meets each individual’s learning needs.
