Ethics application review guidelines

Introduction

Through 2005 ethics applications have followed slightly different paths to the University Human Participants Ethics Committee depending on whether they have originated at Epsom/Tai Tokerau or for the SOE at the City Campus. This document sets out how ethics applications will be supported and signed off within the faculty under the new structural arrangements from January 2006. It includes a statement of policy and a set of procedures for handling ethics applications within the faculty from January 2006.

Statement of policy

All research conducted within the auspices of the Faculty of Education will adhere to the University of Auckland’s Human Participant’s Ethics Committee guidelines available from http://www.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/about/research/ethics/ethics.cfm

Procedures

Ethics advisors within each School of the faculty will support the production of applications in each School within the Faculty.
On the participant information sheets, the principal investigator’s Head of School should be included as the Faculty contact.
Completed applications will be forwarded to the Faculty of Education Research Unit at least 10 days ahead of each University Human Participants Ethics Committee meeting. Dates by which applications need to be at the Faculty Research Unit will be circulated annually (see below for 2006 dates).
Applications will be screened by the Research Administrator (and returned to applicants if found to be incomplete).
When complete applications will be checked signed off by the Faculty of Education’s nominee on the UAHE Committee or her nominee. In 2006, this will be done by Michael Townsend.
Checked and signed copies of applications will be forwarded by the Faculty Research Unit to the University Human Participants Ethics Committee by the due date for each meeting.
