There are two related parts to the EdD admission and enrolment process:
(1) The first is an assessment by the Faculty of Education of your suitability (given your qualifications, relevant professional experience, proposed topic, and the availability of appropriate supervisors) for enrolment in a research programme within the EdD degree (see below: Application for admission to the Faculty of Education EdD programme).
(2) The second involves establishing your eligibility to be admitted to a programme of doctoral study at the University of Auckland (see below: Application for Admission to the University of Auckland).
The Research Portfolio component of the EdD programme usually begins in February or early March of each academic year. There is only one new EdD cohort each year. It is advisable to make plans well in advance and to schedule an appointment with the EdD Programme Leader some months prior to Christmas. Applicants with overseas qualifications need to allow extra time for their applications to be processed.
NOTE: As the programme is currently limited to 12 or fewer students per cohort, on a first-come, first-served basis, it is best to apply in July-August to ensure a place in the following year’s programme.
1. Application for Admission to the University of Auckland
The Application for Admission process should be completed as soon as possible, but not before you have contacted the EdD Programme Leader and confirmed the availability of supervisors for your proposed area of research.
The University offers an nDeva on-line Application for Admission process. Intending candidates (including international students) must complete an Application for Admission form. The Application for Admission form includes a section to be completed by candidates seeking recognition of academic qualifications obtained from institutions other than the University of Auckland (The University’s Admissions Office checks these qualifications). The Application for Admission form is a candidate's formal expression of interest in studying at the University of Auckland and is also necessary to:
(i) initiate and complete the University's admission procedures (which are a prerequisite for registration);
(ii) initiate an academic record for that particular academic year (so that registration can be recorded on the candidate's academic record).
Log on to http://www.auckland.ac.nz/, click on APPLY NOW, and follow the step-by-step instructions. If you do not have web access or cannot come on to campus, please phone 0800 61 62 63 (+64 9 308 23 86) or email studentinfo@auckland.ac.nz for further information.
When submitting copies of original transcripts for assessment, please note that they must be certified by a Justice of the Peace or a solicitor. The person certifying the documents should sight the original(s) and sign the copies. In addition to the copies supplied with the Application for Admission form, please keep one certified copy for submission to the EdD Programme Leader.
If you have further queries relating to admission to the University, or fees and scholarships, please contact the Graduate Centre (postgraduate@auckland.ac.nz; +64 9 3737599 ext. 86899) in the first instance.
2. Application for acceptance to the Faculty of Education EdD programme
As well as applying for admission to the University of Auckland, you must also apply for admission to the EdD programme in the Faculty of Education. Suggested steps are as follows:
1. Review the information in this document to make an initial judgement about your possible eligibility and suitability for admission to the programme. Contact Leigh Beever with any enrolment inquiries:
l.beever@auckland.ac.nz
09 6238899 ext 48882.
2. Contact Dr Vicki Carpenter, the EdD Programme Leader, to express your interest in the programme. The best way to establish initial contact is via email:
v.carpenter@auckland.ac.nz
09 6238899 ext 48511
In your initial e-mail, you must provide the following information:
3. The EdD Programme Leader will discuss your proposed research topic and possible supervisors. The EdD Programme Leader will be able to assist in recommending possible supervisors. It may be necessary in some cases to advise candidates that there is no-one suitably qualified and available to supervise a proposed topic. If you are inquiring about admission to the programme from overseas, you will need to establish contact with prospective supervisors via e-mail. Information about Faculty of Education staff research interests can be found at on the Faculty of Education website.
4. If, following your initial discussions, your prospects for admission to the EdD appear promising, you should complete and submit the Application for Admission form for admission to the University of Auckland, and (for candidates with qualifications from outside The University of Auckland) the necessary documents for Admissions Office approval, as detailed above.
5. When a possible supervision team has been established (you must have agreement from one person to be a main supervisor and another to be a co-supervisor or advisor), you should arrange a formal interview with the EdD Programme Leader, Dr Vicki Carpenter. In some cases, it may be appropriate for the interview to take place before supervisors have been confirmed. The interview will usually be approximately one hour long. It provides an opportunity for you to discuss your background and your proposed topic, to seek further information about the Research Portfolio, Thesis, and other aspects of the programme, and to confirm that you have completed (or will complete) the necessary documentation.
6. Prepare the following items for submission to the EdD Programme Leader at the interview:
Please note 1:
The brief introductory letter which accompanies the application should include a description of any special resources that the applicant needs in order to pursue their research as proposed, e.g., travel funds, equipment/software, etc. It is expected that supervisors would inform the applicant of the resources which are currently readily available at the University.
Please note 2:
The University requires that written references be submitted as part of the registration process for doctoral applicants whose qualifying degree was from another New Zealand or an overseas institution and for UoA graduates seeking to be admitted under the exceptional circumstances clause.
A brief proposal (usually 2-4 single-spaced pages) in which you discuss your intended area of research. There is no prescribed format for the brief proposal, but you might like to structure the document around some or all of these headings: Title for proposed study; Summary of problem or topic; Existing literature relevant to this problem or topic; Key research question(s); Professional significance of topic; Methodology; Ethical considerations; Brief bibliography. You should discuss your brief proposal with your prospective supervisors before submitting it to the EdD Programme Leader. NOTE: Some prospective candidates may be required to submit a longer proposal; the EdD Programme Leader decides on this requirement on a case-by-case basis.
One copy of your academic transcript. Please note that if your entry qualification is not from The University of Auckland, the transcript must be certified, as detailed above. For University of Auckland Masters graduates, a non-certified copy will suffice, but please allow the EdD Programme Leader to sight your original academic transcript or the original certificate for your Masters degree.
7. The EdD Programme Leader considers the items submitted under 6. above and makes a recommendation to the Head of Programme, Postgraduate Studies. If the Faculty supports your admission to the programme, the completed items under 6. are forwarded (with a copy retained in the Faculty) to the Graduate Centre for consideration. Please note that the Faculty of Education does not make the final decision about your entry to the degree. All registrations must be approved by the University’s Postgraduate and Scholarships Committee. If the Chair of the Postgraduate and Scholarships Committee endorses the Faculty of Education’s recommendation, you will receive an official letter from the Graduate Centre confirming your registration in the degree.
8. You should then contact Dr Vicki Carpenter and/or the coordinator of your cohort to seek further information about project requirements and dates for the first Research Portfolio meeting.
9. As the EdD demands intensive study and debate at an advanced level, we encourage all EdD candidates to begin a rigorous reading programme in their nominated research area as soon as possible.
