Teaching Areas

Social work education and professional development, continuing education, professional supervision, the sociology of social work, social work and the risk society, practitioner research in social work, the history and development of social work in health care. A major current project is the development of a new postgraduate pathway for health social work.


Research interests

Social work continuing education, professional supervision in health and social care, the professionalization project, learning discourses in social work, interprofessional learning, practitioner research, the development of social work in heath care in New Zealand. A major project for Liz is a collaborative programme with colleagues Christa Fouché and Phil Harington: Growing Research in Practice (GRIP).

Professional links

Liz has a long-standing commitment to the education and professional development of social workers. Liz was a founding member of the Social Workers Registration Board, appointed in 2003, and chaired the Board’s Education and Practice Standards Committee until June 2006. Liz is a past vice-president of the ANZASW and was the Executive Officer from 1990-96. She was awarded Association life membership in 1990.

Liz edited Social Work Review for ten years until 1994 and guest edited a special issue of Social Work Review, on the topic of issues in social work education, published as Volume 18(4) Summer 2006. She has published articles on social work education, supervision and professional issues in journals in New Zealand and overseas. She is a member of the Editorial Boards for Social Work Education, Australian Social Work and Health Sociology Review and is a reviewer for a number of professional journals.

Previous professional experience

Liz worked for the former Auckland District Health Board for 12 years, mainly in the areas of general and women’s health. She worked as a consultant and trainer until she was appointed director of social work education at the Auckland College of Education in 1994. She was head of social work and human services programme in the university from 2005 and took up her current role as head of the school of Counselling, Human Services and Social Work in January 2008.
