Research strength at The University of Auckland confirmed
4 May 2007

The University of Auckland has more internationally and nationally esteemed researchers than any other tertiary institution in New Zealand. The number of such researchers has increased more than at any other institution.

This is the finding from the latest Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) evaluation carried out by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

The University of Auckland Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart McCutcheon says: "We welcome the PBRF results which reflect the breadth and depth of research excellence at the University."

In TEC’s assessment of 32 tertiary institutions, The University of Auckland has the largest share (33 percent) of A rated researchers in the country.

In total, the University has 209 internationally recognised A rated researchers and 552 nationally esteemed B rated researchers. It also has the largest number of research degree completions in the country. The University earned more external research funding than any other institution with annual revenues from externally funded contracts (excluding PBRF) exceeding $150m.

Following the assessment, The University of Auckland is in line to receive nearly $70m in PBRF funding, over 40 percent more than any other institution and representing 35 percent of the total PBRF pool.

Vice-Chancellor McCutcheon says: "The University’s strategy is to enhance its contribution to New Zealand by building a team of excellent researchers and a world class graduate school. These results show that we are making excellent progress in achieving these aims."
