The Faculty of Education’s Tai Tokerau campus will see a record number of graduands capped in Whangarei at a special graduation ceremony on Friday.

Campus Director Heather Peters says the forthcoming graduation of those who have completed its teacher education programmes marks a significant milestone for the campus. This year’s graduating group of 71 is not only larger than previous years (58 students graduated in 2006) but also clearly reflects the scale and significance of degrees and diplomas offered in teacher education in Northland.

"Graduations are about people - the students, staff, their families and friends. Each group in its own way has played a crucial role in the successes of our graduands. Their achievements highlight the benefits the Far North gains from having New Zealand’s leading university in its backyard," says Ms Peters.

Sam Warriner, New Zealand’s pre-eminent female triathlete, will be the guest speaker at the graduation. The world-ranked athlete came second in the women’s triathlon at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and is now in full-time training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. After settling in this country from England in 1997, Sam taught PE at Whangarei Girls’ High School for eight years before putting her teaching career on hold to focus on her gruelling sport.

The Faculty of Education’s Tai Tokerau campus was established in 1992 and offers teacher education programmes for residents of the Far North. Programmes include Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary, Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Maori, Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) and Foundation Certificate Tohu Tuapapa Matauranga (bridging programme for adult students entering tertiary study). Tai Tokerau also offers a Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Early Childhood Education and Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), both of which have flexible delivery options.

The formal proceedings will begin promptly at 1pm at Whangarei’s Forum North Events Centre. Prior to the ceremony, a street procession will gather at 12:15pm at Laurie Hall Park and march to the events centre.
