Social Work


    Bachelor of Social Work / Bachelor of Social Work(Honours)                                                                                      
Thought about a career in social work? Do you know what human services is? Working in these areas allows you to support people to overcome the barriers they face and to lead valued lives in their communities. Through our degrees in these areas you could go on to work with children and families, youth, disabled people and older people in a range of settings including mental health, hospital settings, schools, the justice system, and community groups and initiatives.

Master of Social Work (Professional)
If you already hold a bachelors degree with study in a relevant discipline such as social science, sociology, psychology, health science or human services then you may be eligible to apply for this two-year masters degree to become a qualified social worker.

Early Childhood Education (ECE)


New Zealand was the first country to develop an early childhood education curriculum. Combine that with a qualification from New Zealand’s leading university and you’ll be poised for an exciting global career.

Our programmes will provide you with networking opportunities with like-minded professionals who enjoy working with young children and their families.

You will learn from a dynamic team of ECE experts who are passionate about early childhood education and have access to excellent resources and facilities including visual arts, technology, the Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library and a wide range of student support services.

Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Early Childhood Education specialisation
As an early childhood teacher you will work with under-five-year-olds during the important early years of their development. This degree will give you the skills, knowledge and professional base necessary for creating positive learning experiences in a variety of early childhood settings.

Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
Use your degree to become an early childhood teacher after one year of full-time study. You will learn about psychology, childhood development, curriculum, language and literacy and so much more to prepare you for a rewarding career where no two days are the same.

This programme is beneficial for those who will work in Centres with a good number of Pacific children, and other settings including kindergartens and childcare centres.

    Primary or intermediate teaching


    Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary specialisation
    Primary teachers teach across the curriculum and also get to share their passion for special subjects, sporting and cultural interests. In just three years of full-time study you could be teaching in your own classroom in a primary or intermediate school and playing an important role in the education and development of our children.

    Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori Specialisation
    Qualified teachers with te reo Māori are in high demand. This degree will qualify you to teach in Māori medium and bilingual classrooms as well as mainstream primary and intermediate schools.

    Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary)
    If you already have a bachelors degree, you may be able to qualify to teach in primary and intermediate schools after just one year of intensive full-time study. Bring your life experience to teaching and play a part in the education of a new generation of bright young minds.

    Master of Teaching (Primary)
    If you already have a bachelors degree (or higher qualification) with an average grade of B or higher, you may be able to qualify to teach in primary and intermediate schools after just 12 months of intensive full-time study. This masters degree has a focus on the learning and engagement of priority learner groups (Māori, Pacific Island, those from special education needs, and those from low socio-economic communities).

    Teaching in te reo Māori


    Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori Specialisation
    Qualified teachers with te reo Māori are in high demand. This degree will qualify you to teach in Māori medium and bilingual classrooms as well as mainstream primary and intermediate schools.

     

     

    Secondary teaching


    Our secondary teaching qualifications require a bachelors degree to enter into the programme:

    Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary)
    If you already have a bachelors degree that links to a subject area taught in New Zealand secondary schools, you can qualify to teach this subject/s at secondary school level after just one year of full-time study. TeachNZ scholarships are available for subject areas where there is a priority for teacher supply.

    Sport, Health and Physical Education


    Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical Education (BSportHPE)                                                                                       Health and physical education, sport coaching and leadership, health education and promotion, dance and sport science – if any of these areas excite you, then this degree is for you. Build your skills and understanding to lead change in communities, improve wellbeing and enable others to enjoy physical activities.

    Education in the Liberal Arts


      Bachelor of Arts - Education                                                                                                                                     If you are interested in education, but not necessarily teaching, you can study Education as either a major, minor or elective subject within a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. The study of Education is essential to informing and understanding life in a modern society. Studies in Education also complement a wide range of other subjects and degrees.

    Foundation Certificates (No fees for 2018 programme)


    The Faculty of Education and Social Work offers two preparation programmes to help students prepare for bachelors degree study in teaching, social work and sport, health and PE. Successful completion allows admission to The University of Auckland for Faculty of Education and Social Work programmes (providing all additional requirements are met). If you are successful in your application for either of these preparation programmes, you will study for free in 2018.

    Foundation Certificate Education
    A one-year bridging programme to develop learning skills and confidence for undergraduate study. It will also help you achieve the academic entry requirements for Faculty of Education and Social Work undergraduate programmes such as the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary specialisation, Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Sport, Health and PE. Other selection criteria also apply.

    Foundation Certificate Education Tohu Tūāpapa Mātauranga
    A one-year bridging programme for people who wish to develop Māori language, tikanga Māori and study skills. Successful completion allows admission into Faculty of Education and Social Work programmes including the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori specialisation. Other selection criteria also apply.
