Starpath Toolkit

An online resource for secondary schools implementing Starpath’s strategies to raise student achievement.

Starpath is an evidence-based whole school intervention focused on transforming educational outcomes for New Zealand students. The project has concentrated on Māori, Pasifika and low income students who are under-represented in degree level study.

Starpath developed a toolkit with the help of the 39 Starpath Partner Schools in Auckland and Northland and staff of the Starpath Project.

The project was also supported by our University of Auckland partners the Woolf Fisher Research Centre and the Centre for Educational Leadership, and our funding partners the Tertiary Education Commission and Foundation North (formerly ASB Community Trust).

The toolkit contained samples of material that teachers could use and customise to meet their school’s circumstances, grouped into:

  • Implementation
  • Academic Conversations
  • Leading Change
  • Data
  • Tracking Progress
  • Literacy
Examples of popular toolkit material are provided below.

Academic Conversations: Two-Way Conversations

Academic Counselling “generally refers to trained professionals counselling students on their academic plans, for course-taking while in secondary school as well as for post-secondary education” (Hughes & Karp, 2004, p. 3).

Data Collection and Management

Schools collect a wide range of data that are generally stored within their SMS system. These data could be used to form a variety of analyses.
