Foundation studies

Discover the range of specialised programmes to help prepare you for tertiary study in education, social work, physical education and human services

The Faculty of Education and Social Work offer two specialised one-year programmes to help you get started in your career. Each programme is designed for those who don't meet the academic requirements to apply for entry into our undergraduate programmes, or would like to build confidence before starting a degree.

Successful completion of either certificate allows admission to the University of Auckland for Faculty of Education and Social Work undergraduate programmes (provided all other entry requirements are met).

If you are over 20 years of age, you can also consider New Start, a University of Auckland programme offered over one semester at various locations in Auckland and Northland.


  • Foundation Certificate Education
    The Foundation Certificate Education is a specialist foundation programme to help bridge your introduction to tertiary study at the faculty.This programme is offered at Epsom CampusUniversity of Auckland at Manukau and the Tai Tokerau Campus
  • Foundation Certificate Tohu Tūāpapa Mātauranga
    Designed for those who also want to develop their te reo Māori at the same time, the Foundation Certificate Tohu Tūāpapa Mātauranga, will provide you with essential learning and tertiary study skills and develop your te reo Māori skills at the same time.
  • New Start
    If you are over 20, then you can also consider New Start - a part-time university preparation programme to help you gain the skills and confidence to undertake university study. This programme is available to study in Auckland Central, Manukau and Whangarei.
