The death of Sir John Graham is a great loss to this country. Sir John was a true leader across so many important areas of New Zealand society.  He was widely held in great respect as an educator – deeply committed to the power of education to change lives, wise and insightful, and generous with his time.

Through the Woolf Fisher Trust he has made a major contribution to the Faculty supporting the Woolf Fisher Trust Masters scholarships and the Honours mathematics and science scholarships.

He met with all the scholars, engaged with their work and, as we hoped he would, pushed them all to ensure their work made a difference to those with whom he was most concerned – the children and young people in our schools.

For all his successes – and they were many in education and beyond – he was first and forever a truly humble man.

Sir John has led a life of service. He will be sadly missed.

Tribute written by the Dean of Education and Social Work, Graeme Aitken.
